Discuss one of the hotest ways to get from here to there: the Segway.
When there is no sidewalk where do you drive your powerchair?
I'm sorry this is totally insane...A man who was riding on the street, because there was no sidewalks was fined 20.00 plus court costs. The original charge was 'reckless driving'Um excuse me, but how can a power chair that probably doesn't break speeds of 5 miles an hour, constitute as reckless driving.I can't believe that someone doesn't have anything better to do than to pick on people like this, and while I"m glad the fine was reduced poeple who are often disabled like this live on fixed incomes.http://www.kentucky.com/779/story/384434.htmlHe has now been ORDERED by a judge not to use his power chair on streets....I'm sorry but if there is no sidewalk, how does he get from point a to point b?What would you do if you were in this person's position?Mooch
I need a wheelchair accessible minivan and I am looking for ideas.
My twenty year old wheelchair accessible minivan broke and cannot be fixed. I cannot use my Electric Wheelchair or leave my house. My disability is deteriorating because I cannot use my equipment. I cannot work and I don't have the money to replace it. A series of people and companies have promised me a van and then it turns out to be untrue. People are very cold and heartless when it is not them. I have tried everything I can think of to replace my van and I am looking for creative ideas on how I could raise the money to replace my wheelchair accessible minivan and regain the independence and functionality I have always had. Please, no sick jokes or nasty comments.
Help My Scifi Novel...
The following are possible stories for my Haven short story collection. Tales of a world in which disabled people have been mostly eliminated, although there is, of course, resistance.1. The story of Adam and Wade... Two identical twin brothers, one with very severe Cerebral Palsy; one able-able-bodied. Adam, who can't speak much verbally (yes, no, a couple of words) and uses a liberator to communicate and gestures as well as an electric wheelchair. Wade and his father pay a lot of fees to keep Adam alive and living at home, but eventually even their riches cannot save him. 2. The story of Darien and Olin- Two gay men, one Normal and one of short stature, who are in love with each other, but because each of them carry disability related genes, they are not sure they afford to be gay and waste their genetic material. 3. The story of Angie, an attic dweller, whose Normal parents bring her to Heaven for medical treatment. Will she be willing to give up her newfound freedom and return to her attic life? 4. The story of Anna, a courier with Celiac Disease, who lives in fear of being of being found out or becoming ill because she must cheat on her diet to avoid being...
This is wheelchair accessible?
Like most people, I've never paid much attention to wheelchair ramps at restaurants. I never thought twice about using the handicap stall in a public restroom if it was available. I remember noticing people parking in handicap parking places and walking into stores without any visible handicap and wondering how they got their permit. I CAN say, I never parked illegally in a handicap parking spot.Since I've started using a wheelchair for family outings, I've noticed there is a wide variance in the compliance of "wheelchair/handicap accessible". Many public restrooms are extremely difficult to navigate. Many stalls are slightly too narrow for a wheelchair to actually fit into the stall. I've had to park my wheelchair in the doorway of the stall, struggle up to the toilet while my daughter stood as lookout, and used the facilities without the privacy of a closed door. Some have a handicap bar on one side, but I had to hold onto my daughter on the other side to keep from using the toilet seat to steady myself. Some hallways or entrances to restrooms are actually too narrow to navigate without hitting walls or bumping door jams. I even had to use the restroom in a doctor's office...
Do you know what you would do if
your spouse became incapacitated and required 24/7 care? I thought I had all the answers until it happened to us.In attempting to get him more help, I made decisions in haste that I now regret at leisure and it's destroying us.My husband had a massive stroke from which he will never recover. The right side is destroyed completely. He can no longer tell me his wishes or do much of anything except feed himself with his left hand.My son wanted us to move to be near him so he and his wife could help. Without thinking it through, I checked to see if my husband could get care he needed in PA. The answer was yes.Within two weeks, I moved him from FL to PA by ambulance, found a rental house for us, put our house on the market as a short sale, and moved to PA. Just prior to moving, I started getting ill myself, but wasn't sure what was going on. My first full day in PA put me in the hospital with a severe bleeding ulcer, requiring a week in a teaching hospital where they kept trying to cure everything with morphine, protonix by the bag and five bags of blood (plasma). Ever concerned about my low blood pressure, the morphine made no sense because it pushes the pressure lower...
