Discuss one of the hotest ways to get from here to there: the Segway. | Boy, it has been one heck of a holiday | | It has been very nice, but busy. Having everyone home has sure been crazy. My son, Bryan, was surprised Christmas Eve, when they brought his new Power Wheelchair. It is a cadillac style. the footrests are power, it tilts, reclines and he is so much more comfortable in it. He was so surprised with it, that he had fun opening the presents, but the chair was more exciting! I am glad he has had time to get used to it before having to use it at school. My son, Michael, had mentioned he wanted a welder for Christmas, but he knew they cost too much. We found a stick welder that is a big one, used, for $40. It was in great shape, so we bought it for him. We then had to wire the garage with a 220, so he could use it. We would not have had to get him anything else, as he was totally thrilled. He is taking welding in school and loves to do it. Bryan was surprised again on New Years eve, as we had a shower/toilet chair delivered to the house. I cannot believe insurance approved all this at once. It is another deluxe chair, we can tilt him back almost in a laying position to give him a shower and it rolls over the toilet so that he can use it. He...
| | There are the just two of us and we have different needs | | Last Monday because we now have the van, my husband decided to go shopping with me. Now our friends drove us to the store, and I figured my husband and his friend would go out to the Mall or to Walmart and since they were guys, possibly to the Home Hardware that was not that far away, but they decided to go to the grocery store with me. Now my friend is a nurse and her husband has to be on a special diet - trying to lose weight and threatened diabetes (or the diabetes that you do not need to take pills) so even though she has to pay more, that is all right with him.
Well my husband has a power wheelchair and even though I rushed off to try to get the healthier stuff, I only managed to get the spices before he found me (should have gone to the produce section right away) and then there was the look at the stuff in the aisles.
Now my husband on the other hand can eat white bread, loves chicken drumsticks, head lettuce, while I have to eat more healthy food like spinach, Romaine lettuce, etc. but when buying one head of head lettuce and one of Romaine, plus the spinach, gets the short shift when he wants me to buy a large packge of drumsticks and the things he loves. I still have...
| | Whether to buy a wheelchair van or not | | All right here is the problem. One we do not have that much money, and are already paying for our house conversion, etc. A friend of ours is driving my husband and I to church. He has a mini bus from work that has power wheelchair access. Now the other day, my husband and he and two other men from the church were discussing if it were feasible to not only convert the church for power wheelchair access (it already has manual wheelchair access) and have already started working on the limp.
Then it seems my husband felt it that friend could not get the min-bus with power wheel chair access from work, and he cannot wheelchair to the church that is at the end of our block, that he would have to buy the van himself.
Now I do not want to go into debt and I do not want to eat a lot and make my diabetes worse because after he is dead, I will be practically penniless. and I would be unable to make enough money in the meantime.
Our church is quite generous and if all of us could pitch in, we could have a converted van just for the Church, so when my husband passes on, then it can be used for someone or a few others who need power wheelchairs.
So do you think that it would be a good...
| | Will it ever end? | | As most of you know, my son, had surgery in March. He ended up with infection in the wound. We are waiting now for him to start running a fever or another sign of infection so they can put him under and hopefully take the rods out, if his back is fused good enough.
A month ago, my sons power wheelchair quit, due to the controller shorting out. It was $1100 to fix, and medical insurance would not pay to fix it because we are trying to get him another chair, due to this one not fitting right due to his surgery.
Two weeks ago, my husbands truck died and we had to get him another vehicle for work.
Last week, our awning on our camper was ruined during a storm.
Sunday my daughter let us know that she had been picked up for DUI. She will have to do jail time, and needs someone to keep her son for probably 6 to 9 months.
This morning my 16 year old son left for school, a friend of ours takes him. He calls about 5 minutes after they left, to tell me he is ok, but has been in an accident. A semi ran a red light and plowed into them. Our friend, who usually helps me every morning with my other son, had to be cut from the car. She is ok, but has a broken right hand, and a bruised,...
| | I'm mad and think I should be now what do I do about it? | | Ok, I'm mad at my telephone company at 4 pm on a Friday afternoon and I think I have an absolute right to be![em]angry[/em]For those of you who do not already know I use a power wheelchair. This means that I must have access to a phone line at all times unless someone is going to be with me. I live alone, but feel safe and secure in the knowledge that someone is a phone call away and I've now worked with my neighbors so that they will be there within 30 sec if need be (I also have a service dog).Well, the telephone company apparently without telling me, was attempting to do some repairs to the outside of my apartment and to our complex. I just had a complete melt down because I went to call my neighbor to ask for assistance only to find that I have no phone! Now keep in mind, my phone is my lifeline and connection to the outside world, should I fall, I have a medical emergency or need any assistance for any reason. I had a complete melt down emotionally, because it is very stressful for me to think that I may not be safe and may not be able to get the help that need. I had already gone outside to get the closest neighbor I could find to render aid, only to come... | |
| | How is today, December 21st going for you? | | My December 21st hasn't gone the way I wanted it to. I was supposed to be at my parent's house, or at least halfway there by now. But the snow, and my parent's broken down van killed that whole plan. I have been watching t.v., hosting, and not doing much else, except look outside at the horrible weather. My big concern is the snow is deeper than my wheelchair tires. If we get more snow overnight, I have no idea how I'm supposed to maneuver my power wheelchair onto the van if the van service is running, and I can catch a train in Springfield. Or my parent's van. But I am supposed to attend to all this tomorrow. Wish me luck. | |
| | Rolling around... | | Yesterday while at the store I saw something that was kind of upset. While walking around picking up food I noticed a young man, somewhere near 25 years old or so, in a power wheelchair also shopping. Several times he asked for help to reach things on a high shelf, everyone rushed to help him, including me.I just happened to be behind him in the checkout lane, I helped him get his small lap-basket onto the belt and started to put my stuff up. As the cashier was scanning the guy's products, I watched in amazement this guy who was in the power wheelchair stand up, walk behind the chair and grab a big bag to carry his purchases in, then walk to the end of the belt and pack up the bag. He then walked back around the chair, placed the filled bag in place and walk to the credit card scanner to pay. He did not appear to have any difficulty walking and was actually bouncing on his toes waiting for his receipt. At this point I felt like shouting some to that fact what a lazy so-n-so he was making people come to his beck and call because we thought he was really having problems. But I did nothing but fume the whole way home. I personally feel that because of people like him some... | |
| | This is kind of strange | | For the last two years, we have been trying to get my son equipment that he needed to help him learn and get around! We finally have gotten all we have been trying for. It all came within the last 3 weeks. Three weeks ago, on the same day, he received his talking device, and touch screen monitor for a computer. Today, he has gotten his Power wheelchair, and a brand new computer. I am so glad he has it all now. It just seems funny that for 2 years we could not get anything and now we get it all in 3 weeks time. He should be in heaven. Isn't it funny how some things just fall into place all at the same time? We will definitely be busy!! | |
| | Why are City Workers paid so much, when they are not doing much it seems! | | Okay so We have had a lot of snow here in the last month and have had winds up to 100 km/hour this winter, which is not usual. I am so angry as 2 weeks ago I was standing at the bus stop as I couldnt get my car out of the driveway due to City Workers not plowing my streets, k that was strike one in my I am so mad thing, but I am standing there and I see this man in a power wheelchair riding on the road, a very busy busy road, cars were honking at him and so on, it was actually quite sad, but he had no choice, city workers did not bother doing the sidewalks! At this time is had not snowed in 3 days so it's not like they were waiting for it to finish! OKay then thursday and friday trees fell down all over the sidewalks, again I am driving by and see this same man on the roads again! It is sunday why have they not taken care of this? Do they not care about the handicap people? Made me so mad that we went a picked up as much of the loose branches as possible but like i said there are actually trees! And a Huge Little Ceasers Pizza Board! | |
