Discuss one of the hotest ways to get from here to there: the Segway.
Whether to buy a wheelchair van or not
All right here is the problem. One we do not have that much money, and are already paying for our house conversion, etc. A friend of ours is driving my husband and I to church. He has a mini bus from work that has power wheelchair access. Now the other day, my husband and he and two other men from the church were discussing if it were feasible to not only convert the church for power wheelchair access (it already has manual wheelchair access) and have already started working on the limp. Then it seems my husband felt it that friend could not get the min-bus with power wheel chair access from work, and he cannot wheelchair to the church that is at the end of our block, that he would have to buy the van himself. Now I do not want to go into debt and I do not want to eat a lot and make my diabetes worse because after he is dead, I will be practically penniless. and I would be unable to make enough money in the meantime. Our church is quite generous and if all of us could pitch in, we could have a converted van just for the Church, so when my husband passes on, then it can be used for someone or a few others who need power wheelchairs. So do you think that it would be a good...
Man Arrested after Driving DRUNK with motorized wheelchair!
Ok, this is reminding me of the guys driving a lawn tractor drunk. But I don't think they ever dared to go on the freeway! That takes some nads driving something that doesn't even go what a mile per hour & traffic is usually 55-65 miles per hour. Seems a lil suicidal to me...http://www.wisn.com/news/20904713/detail.html
Woman in Wheelchair Booed and Shouted Down at N.J. Town Hall Meeting
There really isn't much to say about this, is there? I guess I'd just like to know if anyone else found this to be as disgusting as I did!http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-324434This disabled woman was treated so totally disrespectfully I think those who booed her and made unkind comments should be ashamed of themselves. Any comments?Annie
My husband cannot sit in wheelchair for long rear end hurts
We are waiting for a diagnosis of what my husband has. All I know is that it might be als and it is not a stroke. It also might be muscular dystrophy, but then he is not young so we suspect it is als or a variety of. Now lately, I have been using the Hoyer (that is a machine that lifts a person from one place and puts him in another and it includes a sling made up of very strong material, etc. It is a bit complicated to describe it so here is a link that shows you what they are used for. http://www.planetmobility.com/store/paitentlifts/index.html I have been quite skilled at getting him off of the liftchair and into the motorized wheelchair and from there onto the comomde. Average time on each chair about a couple of hours. I feel like we are playing musical chairs. Now we are attending my younger son's wedding and he does not think he can stay that long because well I cannot take the Hoyer with me and he will be sitting for sometime. And he says his rear end hurts. The motorized wheelchair has a firm cushion of part Miracle Foam and when it was given to us, they thought he had a stroke. So I was wonderong whether it is one of the signs of als that one cannot sit for long,...
Disabled but not in wheelchair
I've been looking online for places that have disabled access, but mostly they just say they have ramps, I have difficulty with some ramps and steps because I use crutches, why is it that if you look for information about disabled things, it assumes you have a wheelchair?
What would traveling your country in my wheelchair be like?
I'm thinking of applying for a fellowship in 2011 which will require me to leave North America for one year entirely. I could make a special exception to come back for a week or so when I need to be re-evaluated for my Personal Care Assistant services. I'm concerned because I'm in a wheelchair. I've never left North America, my family, my friends, or anything familiar for any longer than 5 weeks. On those two occasions I was going to art classes in the states where there are laws about accessibility. I know that there are not always laws but I want to undertake this global adventure anyway. How is it in your country? Should I come there? What problems will I face if any?
wheelchair repair update number 3
As myLotters know, I've had quite a time with my new chair. First, it sparked and then they said I was neglecting it. I was fully prepared for a long road ahead with Medicaid and having to go to tons of appeal hearings to get them to do the right thing. Therefore, imagine my surprise today when I got another notice from my insurance company saying that they would pay for the necessary repairs. As I was totally confused at this point, I called my wheelchair repairman and asked if he knew what was going on. Apparently, Western MA had been sent a bad batch of chairs. About 5 other people had the same problem I did. There were 9 chairs in the whole lot that were sent here, and only four people hadn’t had any problems as of yet but they recalled their chairs anyway. One of the broken chairs apparently belonged to a teenager. I’m glad he wasn’t hurt. I’m glad no one was or the wheelchair company would be in much more trouble now.
Wheelchair Repair Woes
As many of you know, I had my wheelchair implode a month ago. Today, I got news from my insurance company saying they were not going to pay for the repair because they didn't pay for repairs to neglected equipment. Excuse me, I didn't neglect anything! The thing imploded when my assistant plugged it in. I only owned it for 9 days. How much could I have neglected it even if I did? Which I didn't. Now I have to file an appeal. As I type this, I'm on hold making sure they got the fax. Lucky for me, the woman who was here working for me when the chair came can go to my appeal hearing with me and tell them that no one told me anything about the chair blowing up if it was plugged in wrong. No one even told me there was a wrong way to plug it in and she can verify all this. I wonder what happens to people who 1. have no witnesses and 2. aren't as strong of an advocate as I am. I suppose they get screwed. End of rant.
imploding wheelchair update
I called my mechanic today and someone in the office told me that the reason Pumpkin, my wheelchair, imploded was that he was plugged in improperly and now they're not sure the insurance will buy me another control box. I didn't know it was possible to plug in a wheelchair improperly. This has never happened in my over 15 years of owning wheelchairs and besides which it's not like I plugged it in myself. I hope not but I suspect I will spend a lot of time over the next month or so dealing with Medicaid and getting them to do what they should. They said I should call back on Monday and talk to the mechanic directly and then in about two weeks if everything goes according to plan (which it never does in my case) a new control box should be ordered. Wish me luck.
Imploding Wheelchair Update
Dear friends,The wheelchair repair place said they cannot pick up Pumpkin until Wednesday. That's longer than I wanted to wait but what am I going to do? I also have a cold this week so that's not going well. It feels like everything is going wrong. And last week everything was going right. But that's how life works. As a third thing that went wrong, my zines did not arrive in Philly in time for them to be sold yesterday at the Zine Fest there so, no money on that account and I'm really cash poor. I have $7 to my name. Any suggestions on how I could become un-cash poor legally and quickly are most welcome.
