| My new wheelchair imploded! | | Just after midnight, my new chair imploded. There were sparks and everything. My PCA thought there was going to be fire. Luckily I was away from the chair in my bed when this occurred. My PCA was just plugging Pumpkin (name of my new chair) in for the night. Now he’s dead. I’ll call the repair shop on Monday to see if they can schedule an emergency pickup for him. Poor dear, barely a month old and I’ve only had him 9 days and now he’s demised. He had a good life running those 21.4 miles with me, all too often at top speed, even if he can’t be revived. Which, of course, I hope he can after a few days with the mechanics and some much needed TLC. Rest in peace or pieces; I await you’re resurrection. Good thing Sheila (my old chair) was still around to pick up the slack. That way in can still have a life, while waiting for my other chair to be repaired. | |

| | Man in wheelchair robbed bank....and they couldn't catch him???? | | I think it took a lot of guts for this guy to rob a bank but the people in the bank leave something to be desired as far as I'm concerned. I can't believe nobody could stop this guy!Witnesses say the man's legs were wrapped in bandages and his right leg was sticking straight out while he zoomed away. What were the people in the bank thinking? I don't understand why not one person could have followed this 60 year old man out of the bank do you?http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080404/ap_on_fe_st/wheelchair_bank_robbery;_ylt=Ai6JysAOB82S5yc5715dIwUZ.3QA | |

| Disabled Man Dumped from Wheelchair? What do you think? | | Did you hear about the man who was arrested and then dumped out of his wheelchair by an officer who thought he wasn't disabled? I thought it was terrible, a violation of his rights and just plain wrong. Whether they believed he was disabled or not didn't allow them to do this. Whether he did something to so called deserve this i can't believe. Especially when he couldn't move and just laid there like a lump on the floor, when is it enough? It just stuck me as bullying.

| | deputy dumps quadraplegic man on floor out of wheelchair | | http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/02/12/deeson.fl.disabled.man.dumped.wtspOk a man who was videotaped at the sherriffs office being dumped out by a deputy who didn't believe that he was a quadreplegic, was dumped on the floor and laughed at, and another officer laughed...The deputy who did the dumping is now relieved, but the ironic thing is that htere is no record of what he was charged for, because the sherriff's department is denying it every happened, but the video is one that they got from the sheriff's department. How could they be so cruel?
A full investigation is underway, once on the floor an officer frisked him, he is legally able to drive, but I can't believe that htis happened. This makes me very very mad...How would you feel if you saw this happen in your sheriff's office, what would you do if you were there when it happened.Mooch | |

| I need a wheelchair accessible minivan and I am looking for ideas. | | My twenty year old wheelchair accessible minivan broke and cannot be fixed. I cannot use my electric wheelchair or leave my house. My disability is deteriorating because I cannot use my equipment. I cannot work and I don't have the money to replace it. A series of people and companies have promised me a van and then it turns out to be untrue. People are very cold and heartless when it is not them. I have tried everything I can think of to replace my van and I am looking for creative ideas on how I could raise the money to replace my wheelchair accessible minivan and regain the independence and functionality I have always had. Please, no sick jokes or nasty comments. | |
| | Discrimination against wheelchair users Imprisons them in their Homes. | | Your freedom is being Threatened.By the time the American's with Disabilities Act passed in 1990, I had been fighting for accessible facilities and services for disabled individuals for 13 years. Frankly, I got more for disabled people before the ADA passed, because I negotiated using humanitarian and logical arguments. Anyone who works intimately with social-interest laws knows that: laws are not always functional for the purpose they are drawn to address; laws can be corrupted, perverted and misrepresented; laws often end up helping the special interests they are supposed to protect us from; laws often limit rather than enhance. The American's with Disabilities Act is a law that was written to be clarified by litigation. However, overwhelming and frivolous litigation and too little clout against special interests allowed the courts to erode the protections that disabled people were promised. 9-11 further diminished the effectiveness of the ADA by making Homeland Security a priority over civil rights. So, in 2005 a law was passed that was written to distinguish between Medicare in-patients and Medicare services for those who had exited in-patient facilities. The original... | |
